Carl Smith died falling into a hatch of the ship William S. Corey during World
War I. Somewhat ironically, he had been taking a photograph and did not see
where he was stepping.
Carl's middle name of Taylor is probably in remembrance of his grandmother
Elizabeth Taylor, wife of Orrin A. Smith.

About 1907 Frank, J.B. Wortham and Claude Wortham contributed to the building
of Wortham School on an acre of land given by the Wortham family. Students who
attended, in grades one through seven, had never had the opportunity to attend
school. The students sat one grade to each row. There was a wood heater for
which the boys had to chop firewood. The girls swept the floors and cleaned the
blackboards. The facilities consisted of two outhouses--boy's and girl's. Some
of the teachers were Annie Harris (first), Sallie Garlick, Mary Spain, Hellen
Church, Mary Wortham, and Fannie Carroll. The school closed in 1923 when Clark
Street School opened and students began to be bused to Henderson. The school
was sold at auction and was purchased by members of the Wortham family. Its
current condition is unknown. (Barbara Wortham Spain, Heritage of Vance County)
