Note for: Henry S. Sadorus, 26 JUL 1783 - 18 JUL 1878 Index
Alias: /Grandpap/
Individual Note:
From our family book "The Titus, Sadorus and Jordan Families"
Henry Sadorus appears in the 1810 census in Oil Creek Twp., Crawford Co. with 2 males between 16 and 26 in his household. The other male is probably his brother (John?)
There are no SADORUS listed for the 1800 census.
According to Henry "Grandpap" Sadorus's file he enlisted in the War of 1812 and he served under Captain Adam Holliday, commanded by Major Andrew and General Meade. He enlisted August 1812 and discharged in Crawford Co. PA, March 1814.
He received a bounty land warrant #25435 for 160 acres under the Act of March 3, 1855.
At the age of thirty-five he and his family started its treck westward.
The Western Fever, which has prevailed among Americans since the landing of the Pilgrims, attacked Henry "Grandpap" Sadorus and from the native timbers of the region, he constructed a raft of flat boat, upon which he loaded his worldly goods and wife and three children after the manner of that time, set out by water upon a journey westward. Most of the wagon roads were game trails and few bridges existed.
His flat boat was built upon the waters of Oil Creek and they started in pursuit of a home in the West. Following the creek to its junction with the Allegheny River they soon arrived at Pittsburgh and the Ohio River. They headed for Cincinnati, in James Piatt's shinplaster money, making the travelers rich for the time being, but in six months it was shared the fate of its kind and was worthless.
The family remained in Cincinnati for two years, when they again started westward stopping successively at Connersville, Flat Rock. and Racoon in the state of Indiana. Early in 1824, Henry and a neighbor fitted themselves out with a team of two yolks of oxen and a covered wagon, suitable for moving their families.
They passed the site of the city of Indianapolis, where the foundations of the capitol buildings had just been laid. Crossing the Wabash River by a ferry as Clinton, Indiana, the family soon entered the Grand Prairie, After entering Illinois, they met only one house between the State line and the Okaw River, and that was the home of Hezekia Cunningham, on or near the Vermilion River. He kept a small trading post for traffic with the Indians. In April 1824, the Sadorus-Smith party reached the isolated grove at the head of the Okaw River, now know as Sadorus Grove. They camped for the night near the place which eventually became the permanent home of the Sadorus family.
The family remained "squatters" until Dec 11, 1834, when "Grandpap" entered the quarter section at the Vandalia land office. His son Willaim, at the same time, entered the eighty acre tract adjoining to the north, which were the first entries of land in the Sadorus Township.
The family first lived in the southwest quarter of Section 1, Township 17, Range 7, then they decided to erect a building for a tavern. The nearest mill was at Covington, Indiana, sixty miles away. but the lumber was hauled through unbridged sloughs and streams and the tavern was built. The Sadoruses did a thriving business; their corn was sold to drovers who passed his place with herds of cattle for the East, besides being fed to great numbers of hogs on their farm. They grew their own cotton, at least enough for clothing and bedding.
From his obituary it states he was 15 when his family moved to Somerset County, Pennsylvania and spent several peaceful years there pursuing agriculture. He later worked in Canada and then Cincinnati,Ohio. He liked to travel and went to New Orleans by flat boat. From there he crossed the Gulf of Mexico to Cuba and then back up to Baltimore and then overland to his hometown and soon after he married.
During the war of 1812 he enlisted as a private soldier and served for a year. He applied for a pension.
In 1818 and his young family emigrated to Flat Rock,Rush,Indiana. 1824 he disposed of his property there and with his wife and 6 kids left in a prairie schooner drawn by five yoke of steers. He arrived at what is now known as Sadorus Grove. Illinois
