Dear Frank -- Sorry I could not reply to you sooner. Just got back from
our annual month-long trek to the Midwest to visit children and
grandchildren. I have a pile of e-mail to answer.
Micajah or "Micager" Brooks was born 6 Jan 1827 in (probably) Paulding
Co., GA. He was probably (although this is not proven) a son of John
Brooks and his first wife Elizabeth Toler, who were married in Putnam
County, GA in 1814.
Micager Brooks Sr. married first Susan Elaine Sansing abt. 1845, and
they had the following children, so far as I can determine: Iverson L.
(also may have been called "Keven") b. 1846, d. 1866 (important note:
Iverson was a female child); Mary E. b. 1849 in GA; Robert b. 1851 in
GA; Henrietta A. "Ritty Ann" b. 5 May 1851; Cynthia Tennessee b. 1854 in
TX d. 1893 in Healdsburg, Sonoma, CA (she m. John Franklin McCutchan);
Parker Rice b. 1857 TX, d. abt. 1912 in Tulare Co., CA (m. Ellen Burr);
Mancell b. 1861 CA; Paulding V. or "Paul M." b. 1863 CA d. 1952 Tulare
Co., CA (m. Bertha Ellen Reister); Minnie b. 1866 CA; and lastly Micajah
or "Micager" Jr. b. 1868 Tulare Co., CA.
After Susan E. Brooks died in 1869 (she is buried at Deep Creek Cemetery
in Exeter, Tulare Co., CA alongside her daughter Iverson who had died in
1866), Micager married a woman named Mahala Goodin Stearns in 1870.
They had 6 more children: Sterling Lee, Lovick Lillery, Elliott
Pickett, Martha Jewell, Charles Avery, and Ada Mahala. Some time before
1907, probably in the late 1880's or early 1890's, Micajah and Mahala
moved to Lincoln County, WA with one of their sons, probably Paulding..
Micajah died there in 1907 and is buried at Harrington, WA. Mahala died
in 1923 and is buried beside him. I have visited this cemetery and have
photographs of the tombstones.
I have a copy of a letter written from "Micager" Brooks Jr., probably
written in 1938 or 1939, to his brother "Paul" (Paulding). At the time
Micager was living in Santa Ana, California. He included a "birth list"
of his siblings from the "Old Family Bible" which includes his father,
mother, and all of their 11 children. He indicates that his father died
Apr. 30 1907 at Harrington, WA, so this is good evidence that we're
talking about the same Micager Brooks. However, he does not mention
"Robert" in the list -- although Robert was in the 1860 census. Perhaps
the census taker thought that the name "Henrietta" was "Robert."
He also mentions his brother-in-law, George C. Post, so presumably his
wife's maiden name was "Post." Her first name was "Sarah." I have a
note in my files that Micajah Jr. died in the 1930's around Oakland, CA.
This is about all I know. This is a very complicated family. My
great-grandfather John L. Brooks was, so far as I know, the slightly
older brother to this Micajah "Micager" Brooks. After my grandfather
William Albert Brooks moved to the Pacific Northwest around 1900, he
established contact with descendants of his uncle and throughout the
years we have remained "sort of" in contact.
