The following is the Visalia Times Delta on December 16, 1999:
Elva Cecelia McNay Benadom, descendent of an Exeter district pioneer family, and a long-time resident of Exeter, died suddenly on Thursday, December 9, 1999 in Fresno at the age of 95 years.
Elva McNay was born March 17, 1904 in Visalia, California, the second of five children of William Arthur McNay and Mary Alice Jordan McNay. William McNay came to California in 1891 at the age of 21 from Louisville, Kansas and was a well-known businessman in the Exeter area. Alice Jordan McNay was born on August 25, 1884 in Exeter and was employed for many years by the Sprouse & Reitz variety store.
Elva was the great-granddaughter of Captain John Jordan who headed a wagon train from Texas to California in 1850 and settled in Tulare County in 1857 in the lower Yokohl Valley, north of the Hamilton Cemetery. A trail along the Yokohl Creek and across the Sierra to near Owens Lake, a redwood tree in Balch Park, a hot springs and a mountain peak, all in the Sierra Nevada mountain range east of Exeter, bear the Jordan name.
Elva spent her pre-school years in Visalia and then moved with the McNay family to a ten acre section of the Jordan homestead north of Exeter. She attended the nearby Kaweah School for the first few years until her parents built a new home on C Street in Exeter, where she completed her education. She graduated from Exeter Union High School in 1922. Following her graduation from high school, she worked for the Rocky Hill Packing House in Exeter. She joined the Orange Blossom Rebekah Lodge at an early age and was a long-time member of the Exeter Women's Club.
On November 16, 1935, Elva McNay married Joshua Andrew Benadom, Jr. in Bakersfield, California. Josh Benadom was born in Sanger, California and was employed as the Manager of the Mayflower Fruit Association in Exeter from 1934 to 1962. In the following years he was the Packing Manager for the Blue Goose - Exeter Packers and the Valley Sierra Corporation in Exeter. He retired as Manager of the Strathmore Grape Growers Association in 1970. He died in Exeter on August 30, 1989 after 53 years of marriage. Elva Benadom was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother to her two daughters, Alice Madeliene Benadom Schafer and Brenda Lee Benadom, and was beloved by her family. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her ready smile, her love of flowers, her sharp intellect and her understanding of human nature.
In January 1993, Elva Benadom sold her home of 51 years on Sierra Drive in Exeter and moved to Fresno to be near her daughter, Alice Schafer, and her family. She lived at Carrington Pointe, a retirement community, for more than six years where she enjoyed independent living. In 1995, her younger daughter, Brenda Benadom, retired and moved to Fresno, as well, from Alexandria, Virginia.
Elva Benadom was preceded in death by her husband, Josh Benadom; her three brothers, Orval Walter McNay, Allison Jordan McNay, and Arthur Wesley McNay; and her sister, Alice California McNay Wilson.
She is survived by her two daughters, Alice Madeliene Benadom Schafer and Brenda Lee Benadom, both of Fresno; a son-in-law, Donald James Schafer of Fresno; a grandson, Michael John Schafer and his wife, Rhonda Parr Schafer, of Fresno; a granddaughter, Karen Alice Schafer of Walnut Creek; and two great-grandsons, Jonathan Grant Schafer and Michael Blake Schafer of Fresno. Other survivors include ten nieces and nephews and numerous cousins from the Jordan and McNay families.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday, December 14, 1999 at the Exeter District Cemetery under the arrangements of the Evans-Miller Exeter Funeral Chapel. Pastor Mitch Ribera of the Northwest Church of Fresno officiated. Eulogies were delivered by McNay family members, nephew Richard Wendell Wilson of Kingsburg and David Brumfield of Aptos, the husband of niece Elva May McNay Brumfield. Following the service, family and friends were received at a lunch at the Vintage Press restaurant in Visalia.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
