Mussel Slough twp, 1880, James Jordan, Jennie, Lulu, Pearl and Ola. Thanks
for the reminder abt James. I went and checked my Jordan file, which is
different from the Jordan's in my personal file, and this is what I found
as the children of James and Jennie. I'm quite certain that Frank L is
_not_ their child, and I now know that James is not (re Jennie's death
date) it is possible that Claude Jordan was mentioned on the group photo I
sent for the reunion, I know Pearl is. we should assume that he isn't a son
until we have further data.
some of my sources for these kids are from your Blakemore contact, whom I
accepted
data from and tried to get sources, but did not succeed.
I have 1888 for a b. date for James O., and there's a b. date of 1870 in
your files. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I came by my data.
Roy is the "unnamed" son, b. and d. in 1883 - Cornelia Fenenga Warner, This Information Obtained From: 1. Cornelia Fenenga Warner, 11/10/1998.

Note for:   John Francis Jordan,   10 DEC 1852 - 1917         Index

Alias:   /Johnny/

Individual Note:
John F Jordan, graduated from Heald's Business College in San Francisco in 1873. Later, he, with Dan Overall, and William Hammond, formed the Visalia Abstract Company and Jordan carried this business for many years. When he sold, his nephew, J. Herbert (Bert) Bliss purchased it and was the owner when he died in 1915.
"Johnny", had a genuine liking for all his many friends. In inquiries about land it was a familiar femark, - " Ask Johnny, he knows every foot of land in Tulare County". Typically Pioneer in all his thoughts and faith in his fellow man, he holds a place in the early history of Visalia.

John Francis Jordan, was the owner of following Businesses:
Visalia Abstract Co.
Visalia Bank
Palace Hotel
He served on the Visalia City Counsel.

HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD.

JOHN F. JORDAN. While the abstract business has engaged the attention of during a large portion of the time since he settled in Visalia, his work as secretary and manager of this enterprise by no means represents the limits of his activities. As evidence of his varied interests it may be mentioned that lie assisted in the organization of the Kaweah Lemon Company, Incorporated, of which he is now secretary anti which owns two hundred and fifty acres in the foothills fast of Visalia. As a director of the Enema Fruit Company he is closely connected with die development of the company s property. embracing four hundred and forty acres two miles north of Visalia. In addition he holds the office of secretary of the Lemon Cove Ditch Company and is secretary of the Queen Oil Company in tile establishment of which he took an active part. Ever since the organization of the Acme Oil Company in which he assisted, he has been a member of its board of directors, and he was also a prominent worker in organizing the Visalia Fruit and Land Company. It will be readily understood that the management of these important interests requires a versatile mind, keen reasoning faculties, indomitable energy and force of will, all of which qualities Jordan possesses.
In the eastern part of Texas. December 10, 1830, occurred the birth of John F. Jordan, son of Frank and Alabama McMicken Jordan, natives respectively of Illinois and Alabama. His father removed to Texas in an early day and lived there for some time, also owned and managed a plantation near Shreveport, La. When lie came to California in 1834 he made the trip overland as captain of a train comprising seventy-four families. Settling in Monterey county, in what is now San Benito county, he took up the hotel business. and began to raise and deal in stock. In 1858 he came to Tulare county and two years later brought his family to Visalia, which he afterward considered his home, although the buying and selling of stock frequently required his presence in other places for considerable periods. His death occurred in Visalia in 1878. when he was fifty-nine years of age, he having survived his wife who passed away in San Benito county. In politics a Democrat. always a he was supporter of party principles. Not with standing the fact that he came to California entirely without means, he accumulated considerable property and was considered One of the successful men of his day.
Among four sons and three daughters comprising the parental family (of whom three sons and one daughter are living), John F. Jordan was fifth in order of birth. The trip across the plains occurred when he was a child of four years, hence the greater part of his life has been passed in California. After completing the studies of the Visalia public school he took a commercial course in Heald's Business College at San Fran cisco, from which he was graduated in February of 1875. On his return to Tulare county he was appointed deputy postmaster and the following year (1876) received the appointment of deputy sheriff. In 1879 he was elected county auditor and served in that capacity during the five ensuing years. On retiring from office he turned his attention to the abstract business, which he started in 1884 and in 1892 incorporated as the Visalia Abstract Company, he being secretary, manager and a director. Under his supervision a large business has been established in the bringing down of abstracts and perfecting of titles, and no one is recognized as a more accurate judge of titles than he. The know ledge he has acquired along this line represents years of study as well as actual experience and makes his advice concerning titles of the greatest value.
After coming to Visalia and taking up active business duties. Mr. Jordan established domestic ties through his marriage to Alice L. Neil, a native of California. They are the parents of three children: Ethel V., Roy F., and Neil J., all of f whom are at home. In Masonry, Mr. Jordan ranks high, being a member of Lodge No. 128. F.& A. M., at Visalia: Chapter No. 44 R. A. M.; Commandery No. 26. K. T., of which he acts as recorder: Scottish Rite No. 9. of which he is treasurer; and Islam Temple. N. M. S.. San Francisco. Always a pronounced Democrat, he has been a local leader of his party, at one time served on the county central committee, in 1904 acted as delegate to the state convention, and in other ways has manifested his interest in the progress of the party.
