More recent research has shown that Mahala's first husband was John Starnes (1816-1863) who died in Missouri during the Civil War. After the birth of her child, William Foy Starnes, in December 1863, Mahala made her way to California where she met and married Micager Brooks. William Foy Starnes died in 1940 in California. He was married to Dora M. Kuker.
